Volunteer Information for MAP International

The volunteer program provides avenues for people to invest their skills, minds, and hearts in support of MAP International’s mission. MAP International volunteers have the power to increase public awareness about the health issues facing the poorest of the poor. Most importantly, the skills and time volunteers contribute allow MAP to free up its resources to better meet the needs of the men, women, and children we serve.

By volunteering you have the opportunity to gain personal growth and a sense of purpose in knowing you are touching the lives of the poor and needy around the world. Every task, no matter how small, has a significant beneficial effect on the bigger picture saving lives. Volunteering at MAP provides the opportunity to meet people from within the community and become part of a team that is excited and united in their purpose.

Volunteer Opportunities

Year round volunteer support is essential to meet the ever expanding needs of MAP International’s programs. We welcome volunteers who can help with one-time-projects, work on short term assignments, on-going medicine packing, or are willing to be on call for international or domestic emergencies. Our volunteers can offer their time daily, weekly, monthly, or occasionally.

  • Multi-departmental Administrative Support
  • This volunteer opportunity provides support to different MAP departments on an as needed basis. Requirements often include attention to detail, basic office and computer skills, and a willingness to learn. The days and times are flexible. A few examples of office related tasks include:
    • data entry
    • assisting with bulk mailings
    • front desk coverage
    • miscellaneous office tasks
  • Distribution Center
    • This volunteer opportunity involves packing medications for MAP’s Travel Packs. This takes place in our Distribution Center and always occurs on a Wednesday or Friday at 10am. The Volunteer Coordinator makes calls to volunteers one week prior to the scheduled pack to ensure coverage. A medicine packing typically requires 35 volunteers, although some smaller packs have a requirement of 12 to 15. The requirements are physical in nature and include the ability to bend and stand for two hours, engage in repetitious arm movements, as well as perform some light lifting. Additionally, a volunteer must be 16 years or older to volunteer in our Distribution Center.

Volunteer Orientation

All volunteers must attend a one hour orientation. The volunteer orientation covers the following topics:

  • MAP’s History
  • MAP’s Mission
  • Overview of MAP services and programs and Medicine Packs (Travel, Johnson & Johnson, Custom)
  • Volunteer impact, opportunities and requirements
  • Tour of MAP offices and Distribution Center
  • Code of Conduct / Health & Safety Procedures
  • Recording volunteer hours, parking, etc.

Upon conclusion of the volunteer orientation each volunteer completes and signs a New Volunteer Information Form which is kept on file by the Volunteer Coordinator. A database is maintained by the Volunteer Coordinator of volunteer contact information, interests, and availability to ensure volunteers are linked with the appropriate activity.

Church Groups/Visiting Volunteers

During the summer and school breaks, church groups and other groups of volunteers offer their helping hands. These groups are asked to arrive an hour early so that they can be properly introduced to MAP before beginning to pack or support any other volunteer activity.

Student Volunteers

Every year, several local area high school students choose MAP International for their community service hours. The student volunteers go through the same process as all of our volunteers. Student volunteers offer their time to support mostly administrative projects after school in the afternoon.

If you live near the MAP International Brunswick offices, please contact Sara Green at (912) 280-6654 or sgreen@map.org to learn if there are volunteer opportunities available at this time.
