10 Pillars of Total Health

In carrying out its Total Health mission, MAP International addresses global health challenges through ten major initiatives. These efforts contribute directly to MAP’s mission of promoting Total Health for people living in the world’s poorest communities by partnering to:

• Provide essential medicine
• Promote community health development
• Prevent and mitigate disease, disaster and other health threats

Community Health Promoters
By training community health workers in Latin America, Africa and Asia to identify, treat and manage common illnesses and promote community health, MAP seeks to create a local health resource that can help serve the community’s needs in the absence of formal services.

Community Pharmacy
MAP International is operating small pharmacies in Ecuador’s rural and marginal urban communities that offer not only medicines but also basic medical care. These facilities are staffed by health promoters trained by MAP International.

Emergency Response and Disaster Relief
MAP International is saving lives by providing emergency healthcare, medicines and medical supplies in the aftermath of disasters and medical crises, as well as providing treatment for the survivors of such tragedies.

HIV and AIDS Prevention and Care
According to the World Health Organization, over 33 million people are infected with HIV worldwide, and most live in poor countries where there is little or no access to essential medicines. MAP International has been providing medications and training for HIV treatment and prevention for more than a decade.

Long-Term Health Development
According to the World Health Organization, over 10 million lives could be saved every year in the developing world if people had the medicines they required. Working with a range of partners from local health institutions to global community health programs, MAP International addresses the shortage of medicines and supplies at every level of the health care system development in poor countries through its Long-Term Health Development (LTHD) Program.

MAP Travel Packs
For more than 20 years, 3M has worked alongside MAP International to help provide much-needed medical care to people in developing countries. Each year, 3M provides millions of dollars in financial and product support that MAP distributes to more than 115 nations around the globe.

Medical Fellowships
Each year, MAP helps medical students gain valuable field experience by funding medical trips to countries around the globe. MAP International seeks to foster in medical students a long-term interest in the eradication of disease and other global health issues endemic to the developing world. By exposing participants to other cultures and medical challenges, MAP provides students with the opportunity to see first-hand the need for continued medical assistance in such regions.

Preventing and Responding to Sexual Abuse
The issue of domestic and sexual abuse has long been a hidden secret--poorly understood and grossly underreported--in many Latin American countries. MAP International’s"Centro Una Brisa de Esperanza" or Center for Breeze of Hope (CUBE) is a comprehensive program designed to raise community awareness of abuse and rescue its victims.

Total Health Village
The goal of a Total Health Village is to build a holistic system within which a community addresses its own development issues. Strategies are adopted which facilitate social transformation over an extended period of time. Over time the community develops the resources and knowledge needed to maintain the advances that they institute over the course of the project.
