Pakistan Update: 14 Million Affected as Rains Continue

MAP is responding with shipments of medicines and supplies to the region

After almost four weeks of rains that have caused flooding throughout the countryside, washing away villages and farms, there is now an urgent need to scale up the response in Punjab and Sindh provinces, Pakistan's most populous regions. 

 

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs now estimates that up to 6 million people are in need of food assistance and other basic supplies.

Flooding in Pakistan Worst in 80 Years

After two weeks of rains that have caused flooding throughout the countryside, washing away villages and farms, the disaster is spreading into Pakistan's most populous provinces of Punjab and Sindh.  

 

 "Altogether, more than four million people are in a way or another affected," said Manuel Bessler, head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Pakistan.

 

 The UN World Food Program says 80 percent of food reserves have been destroyed in the flooding which means that the aftermath if the flooding will bring a new crisis as the ravaged country tries to feeds it people. 

 

According to a report from Agence France-Presse, an international relief campaign is stepping up including a 10-million-dollar aid package from the United States. Read more...
