Promotion of Community Health

At MAP, we define Total Health as:  the capacity of individuals, families, and communities to work together to transform the conditions that promote, in a sustainable way, their physical, emotional, economic, social, environmental and spiritual well being.”
We seek to promote the Total Health of the communities we serve through the identification, training, equipping, and supporting of community leaders – and we work with these Community Leaders, considering them our primary partners in improving the health of all the individuals and families within their communities.

In addition to working with Community Leaders, we also identify candidates to become Community Health Promoters. These special men and women are then trained to affect change within their community.  Their training includes the needed education and practice to:

  • Provide information on prevention and control of health problems
  • Promote positive health activities such as safe food production and development of access to potable water supply
  • Promote immunization as a means to prevent disease
  • Treat common diseases and injuries
  • Provide essential medicines

Kilonga THV Logframe

How a Village is Changing Itself and Improving Lives in Kenya

By Michael Nyenhuis, President and CEO

Kilonga, Kenya – In my country, everyone knows the “log cabin” as a symbol of life on the frontier. Made by stacking uncut logs, settlers built these cabins as they moved across our continent long ago. Today, families build them in the woods as vacation getaways.

In the international relief and development world, everyone knows the term “logframe.” Short for “logical framework,” it is a systematic way to describe a development project. It starts with an overarching goal, and describes the activities, outputs, and outcomes necessary to achieve a desired impact. That might sound complicated, but it’s really not. It is a useful tool to make clear what needs to be done by whom and by when.
