“What do you want for Christmas this year?” my family begins to ask in November. They usually follow up with, “And don’t say ‘nothing’!” because they know that’s what I usually say.
The fact is that I, like many people, already have more than I need. I struggle every year to come up with a list of Christmas present ideas for my family. So this year I tried something new.
“I know exactly what I want,” I said to the surprise of my family. “Vitamins.”
My husband looked at the big bottle of vitamins on our table and then at me. “Not for me. For pregnant women who can’t afford them and risk having babies born with birth defects and disease…
“…and for children in countries where malnutrition is a fact of life and they often develop vitamin deficiencies.”
As they were processing that request, I added, “And antibiotics. Do you know how desperately antibiotics are needed around the world? Do you know that a simple cut or scrape can become life-threatening if not treated?”
They had heard me tell this before, when I’d returned from overseas trips, so they nodded along, still trying to understand where I was going.
"And if you need another idea, I’d really like some surgical gloves. The kind we see in our doctor’s office but are so hard to find in resource-poor countries. The kind of gloves that protect the health care workers and stop the spread of disease.”
My family looked genuinely confused so I said, “Here, I’ll make it easy for you. What I want is all in this catalog.” Instead of handing them a fancy wish list book from a department store, I gave them the MAP 2017 Gift Catalog.
“Oh…,” they said as they opened the MAP 2017 Gift Catalog, “now we understand.”
