Edwards Lifesciences Medical Product Donations
As part of its Every Heartbeat Matters (EHM) charitable initiative, Edwards Lifesciences donates surgical heart valve and critical care technologies to MAP International to support EHM humanitarian work treating underserved structural heart and critical care patients outside the U.S.
A licensed U.S. physician's signature is required to receive donated medical products so MAP can validate ability to perform procedures. This physician must attest and agree to program requirements including the following:1. Physician is trained to use requested products
2. Read, signed, will adhere to commitments of the program’s MOU
3. Promise to not sell or exchange products for money or services
4. All medical treatment provided with products will be performed as a charitable act and no entity will seek payment or reimbursement for treatment involving donated product
5. All received donated product will either be used and registered with Edwards or disposed of in an appropriate manner
6. Reading and understanding of instructions for reporting adverse events or product complaints to Edwards related to donated product
7. Product may not be used to treat government officials or their family, hospital employees or their family, requestor’s employees or their family, or non-profit organization employees or their family
Physicians from outside the U.S. may participate in this program by partnering with a U.S. licensed physician to facilitate the request, and validate and participate in the humanitarian program outside the U.S.
Products available for humanitarian medical programs outside the U.S. include surgical aortic and mitral replacement heart valves, surgical mitral and tricuspid repair rings, hemodynamic monitoring systems and related critical care sensors.
EHM Core Products
Edwards donates surgical heart valve and critical care products (EHM Core Products) to MAP to support two shipments per humanitarian program per year with the following products available per shipment:
- Heart Valve Products - Up to 20 surgical heart valve replacement and/or repair products
- Critical Care Sensors - Up to 20 critical care sensors
- Critical Care Monitors - 1 critical care monitoring platform
To promote sustainability of local physicians treating local patients, programs deemed by requestor to be sophisticated enough to do humanitarian medical work without the visiting medical team may request additional EHM Core Products to treat up to 50 patients per year after the mission.
Please note that Edwards transcatheter heart valve products are not available for this program.
Periodically Available Products
From time to time, Edwards will donate other Edwards products to MAP that will be available for requestors on a first-come-first-serve basis. There are no quantity request limits for products available periodically. MAP will manage the periodically available product inventory to support as many humanitarian programs as possible.
Eligibility to receive donated products will be determined based on the completed eligibility forms. Continued eligibility will be dependent upon reports received and adherence to the stated guidelines and signed agreements.
MAP policy does not allow for transport of medical products to any U.S.-embargoed country, or country’s subject to economic sanctions, e.g. Cuba, Syria, Iran, North Korea and Sudan, without the ordering partner providing proof of having obtained the required licensing from the appropriate departments of the U.S. government. Additionally, Edwards donated products are not available for humanitarian programs serving China.
MAP will assess a service fee of $250 per shipment, however, Edwards Lifesciences Foundation grants will be used to pay for the costs of shipments from MAP to partners’ U.S. locations.
