Hurricane Harvey

Disaster Response: Texas

As flood waters recede in Texas, tens of thousands of people have lost their homes and are now vulnerable to health threats resulting from this catastrophie.

For the people of Texas, MAP International is doing what it does best.  For 60 years, MAP has been responding to disasters worldwide by providing medicine and health supplies.

MAP International has already sent thousands of disaster health kits. These kits  include antiseptic wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and soap.  All of these items will be critical in ensuring that disease doesn't spread following this disaster.

Health Conditions & Threats

• Flooding and disasters like Harvey hurt children, the elderly and disabled the most.   Many already have compromised health.  Events like this make them even more susceptible.

• So many were exposed to floodwater.  They are at risk for skin rashes and infections, ear, nose and throat problems, conjunctivitis, respiratory illnesses and gastrointestinal sickness.

• People have been living in shelters for more than a week. Living in such close quarters also makes people vulnerable to illness.

MAP Response

• For the people of Texas, MAP International is doing what it does best.  For 60 years, MAP has been responding to disasters worldwide by providing medicine and health supplies.

• MAP sent its first shipment of relief supplies August 28.  This included 1,250 disaster health kits (DHK) to help prevent the spread of disease.  The kits include antiseptic wipes, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste and other essential items.  Each kit is designed to help meet the needs of one person residing in a shelter for one week.

• In Texas, MAP is teaming with Convoy of Hope to provide disaster health kits. We worked with Convoy of Hope for more than a decade, most recently to help people in Louisiana who experienced flash floods in 2016.

• Convoy of Hope distributed the 1,250 health kits to people living in shelters near Victoria, Texas.  This week, MAP International is preparing to send even more health kits for people in the Houston area.

• MAP International volunteers packed an additional 500 DHKs and 100 Johnson & Johnson Medical Mission packs August 30. These supplies will be trucked to Texas this week along with relief goods supplied by World Assist.  MAP is also preparing to send 28,000 disaster health kits provided by Cardinal Health the following week.

• MAP International is also working to support other large scale disasters. We’ve provided more than $2 million in medicines and more than 1,000 disaster health kits for Syrian refugees in Jordan and Lebanon.  Later this month we will provide $12.1 million in medicine and health supplies for people in Freetown, Sierra Leone who experienced massive mudslides and flooding only two weeks ago.

How people can help

• The problem in Texas is not just a Texas problem. This is a huge disaster that will take a long time to recover.

• The best support anyone can provide is a cash gift. This puts resources in the hands of people who are experienced in helping people recover.

"We've already sent more than 1,250 health kits. We're planning to do even more.  Our partners are ready to distribute as many health kits as possible. We need your help to purchase additional supplies to ensure that these American families stay healthy during this heartbreaking disaster. Please continue to pray for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey."
