A cyst no more: a sigh of relief

Cambodia – The 2.5-hour ride on the back of that motorbike was almost more than Sopha could take. She had been suffering from excruciating abdominal pain from growing ovarian cysts, and her husband was taking her to the main hospital in the capital city of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where they live.

With each passing mile of their journey, Sopha’s pain became more and more unbearable. When they finally pulled up to the hospital, Sopha breathed a sigh of relief.

But when they went inside, the hospital staff informed her that they had no supplies or equipment available to perform the surgery she needed – she would have to wait 9 more days for the volunteer surgical team who would soon be arriving with all of the necessary medical supplies from MAP.

Sopha sank into her husband’s arms. Nine more days? She wasn’t sure she could endure this level of pain much longer. But it seemed she had no other option. Sopha mentally steeled herself, and prayed for time to pass quickly.

When MAP’s partner volunteer team finally arrived, they unpacked 22 suitcases worth of vital medical supplies, and began making rounds to meet with each scheduled surgical patient. The first of these patients was Sopha.

Given the severity of Sopha’s pain, and the amount of time she had already been waiting, her surgery was pushed forward, and the volunteer surgeons were able to successfully remove her painful ovarian cysts.

MAP’s partner representative describes the drastic transformation the surgery had on Sopha. “After a few days of rest and recovery, Sopha thanked our surgeons profusely, hopped on her motorbike, and had a pain-free ride back to her home.”

Thanks to MAP’s supporters, Sopha was able to get back to living her life, unhindered by debilitating pain. Transforming lives like Sopha’s is why MAP exists. We believe that every person, no matter where they live, deserves the chance to live life to the fullest.
