For Years, Elena Waited for Help

On a remote island in Panama’s Bocas del Toro region, Elena had been living with frightening symptoms for years — constant fatigue, blurry vision, and a burning pain in her feet. With each passing year, her condition grew more serious, and without access to care, the risk to her health only increased.

Like so many families in hard-to-reach communities, Elena had little cash income and no practical way to travel for medical care. So she did what mothers and caregivers often do when there are no good options: she pressed on. She worked through the pain, pushed past the warning signs, and kept caring for her family even as her health quietly worsened.

When a clinic from Floating Doctors finally reached her community, Elena came hoping for answers before it was too late. Because of MAP International’s partnership with Floating Doctors, the medical team arrived with a reliable supply of essential medicine — not only to diagnose patients, but to help them begin treatment right away. In places where care can feel out of reach, that kind of immediate help can make all the difference.

Testing revealed that Elena’s blood sugar was dangerously high, and her symptoms pointed to type 2 diabetes. Thanks to donated medicines provided through MAP, the team was able to start her on metformin and teach her how to manage her condition. What could have become an even more serious crisis became the beginning of healing — because generous supporters helped ensure that medicine was there when she needed it most.

Today, Elena no longer has to suffer in silence. Her illness has a name. Her condition can be treated. And because she now has access to the medicine she needs, she can look ahead with greater strength and stability — returning to the work of caring for her family with renewed health. Thanks to the compassion of faithful partners and donors, stories like Elena’s do not end in fear. They move forward with treatment, relief, and hope.
